Mike Diabo/ Ukulele Surf Kings
Mike Diabo plays ukulele: not just the sit around the campfire strumming and singing Five Foot-Two, but Jazz ukulele. He plays standards & not so standards from Jerome Kearns & Duke Ellington to Thelonius Monk & Ornette Coleman. Inspired by Lyle Ritz, Bill Tapia & Tiny Tim, Mike has been turning the once again popular ukulele into a 4-string swing machine, showing audiences at his solo shows what is possible with 4 strings & 2 octaves.
Mike’s Ukulele Surf King (Reverb Ranch) solo album was released in 2011, and there are plans for a trio recording sooner than later. He is sponsored by the Mya Moe Ukulele Company out of Washington State, USA.
Ukulele Surf Kings features Andrew Beazley on Ukulele Bass, and Frank den Haan on suitcase traps. The uke trio has been featured around Halifax (Halifax Jazz Festival,The Company House, Argyle Fine Art, 1313 Hollis, Natal Day and various festivals), and abroad (International Ukulele Ceilidh in Liverpool, 2012 PEI Jazz & Blues Fest, 2015 Surfer Joe Summer festival in Italy, Halifax Jazz Festival .
